SUMMARY:Westbound Situation (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Westbound Situation blends the precision of classical chamber music\, the rhythmic drive of bluegrass\, and the colorful expression of jazz into a new style of chamber music—chambergrass. The quartet—comprised of Grant Flick on violin\, Matt Davis on banjo\, Zach Brown on cello\, and Jacob Warren on bass—mixes composition and improvisation seamlessly into their entirely memorized arrangements. — www.westboundsituation.com \nThe group formed out of the 2016 Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS)\, a program run by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall. The program accepts 16 talented string players under the age of 22 from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation\, composition and performance training. All four were two time participants\, an honor that not everyone is able to receive. Some notable AMS alumni include Paul Kowert of the Punch Brothers\, Alex Hargreaves of Turtle Island String Quartet\, and Xavier Foley\, winner of the 2014 Sphinx Competition. \n\nWestbound Situation has a strong commitment to music education. The group’s combined experience in classical\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and original/improvised music is something not typically offered in the standard curriculum found at most schools and colleges (at least not all at the same time). These styles\, among others\, give each student the chance to make their own music\, and through this process valuable lessons in creativity\, listening\, and leadership are achieved. Each member of the group maintains a private studio\, and all have been invited to provide workshops and masterclasses at schools and festivals across the country. \nWestbound Situation’s exciting and diverse concerts feature a set of unique original repertoire colored with recognizable standards from many genres. With bluegrass\, classical chamber music\, and jazz all coming together in the group’s concept of chambergrass\, a Westbound Situation concert is dazzling musical journey not soon forgotten. \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. Audiences and artists are encouraged to interact\, and the spirit of the live show is preserved in the radio program and recordings. If you would like to attend a session\, contact Andru.

SUMMARY:Hubby Jenkins (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Hubby Jenkins (Carolina Chocolate Drops\, Rhiannon Giddens) is a talented multi-instrumentalist who endeavours to share his love and knowledge of old-time American music. Born and raised in Brooklyn\, he delved into his Southern roots\, following the thread of African American history that wove itself through country blues\, ragtime\, fiddle and banjo\, and traditional jazz. Hubby started his higher musical education as a busker. He developed his guitar and vocal craft on the sidewalks and subway platforms of New York City\, performing material by those venerable artists whose work he was quickly absorbing. An ambitiously itinerant musician\, he took his show on the road\, playing the streets\, coffee shops\, bars\, and house parties of cities around the country. – www.hubbyjenkins.com \n\nAfter years of busking around the United States and making a name for himself\, Hubby became acquainted with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. From 2010 until their last show together in 2016\, he was an integral part of the Grammy award winning group. Since 2015\, he has been an active touring and recording member of the Rhiannon Giddens band. He was on her album Tomorrow Is My Turn in 2015 and Freedom Highway in 2017. Today he spreads his knowledge and love of old-time American music and history through his dynamic solo performances. \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. SUMMARY:"Ragtime" Jack Radcliffe (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:He’s been a newspaper editor\, ethnomusicologist\, author\, tall ship captain\, outdoor leader and award-winning music producer. He’s been called “The Mark Twain of traditional American music\,” and has travelled more than a million miles on the back roads of our nation\, gathering\, learning\, singing and promoting the music of our diverse cultural experience. He’s “Ragtime” Jack Radcliffe\, and you don’t want to miss him when he comes to town. — facebook.com/ragtimejack \nNow a resident of Massachusetts\, with roots in Virginia and Tennessee\, Jack\, brings his piano\, guitar\, fiddle\, voice\, wit and wisdom with him wherever he goes. \nJack has been performing for more than 40 years. He was a fixture on the coffeehouse circuit in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. His band “The New Viper Revue” pushed the genre envelopes of blues\, folk\, country\, rock ‘n’ roll and jazz from 1972 -1976. Jack resumed his solo career in 1977\, then teamed up with reed player Al Oliveira in 1983\, as half of “The World’s Smallest Big Jazz Band.” He founded Wepecket Island Records\, a label devoted to preserving the traditional music of America\, in 2003\, and continues to serve as its president and executive producer. \nRagtime Jack is a master of traditional country blues and ragtime & stride piano\, and a powerful singer of songs from the “Great American Folk Scare” of the 1950s and ‘60s. He also accompanies himself on the guitar and fiddle. Jack was inducted into the Old-Time Music Association Hall of Fame in 2014 along with Joanne Cash and Patti Page. Jack’s performances always include a lot of uplifting wit\, historical anecdotes and connections with local lore\, wherever he performs. His background in journalism amplifies a lifelong quest for the cultural framework of his music and the places he performs. \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. SUMMARY:Debra Cowan & John Roberts (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:With their eloquent voices and expert musicianship\, John Roberts and Debra Cowan bring to life songs seldom heard on TV or radio these days. Drawn from both the folk tradition and the work of contemporary songwriters\, many of these songs tell of the timeless joys and sorrows of human experience. They offer windows into where we’ve come from and perhaps where we’re headed. Both John and Debra can spin a ripping good yarn and whether illuminating\, inspiring\, or laugh-out-loud funny\, their stories convey their love of the songs and the people who’ve sung them over the years\, decades — and in some cases centuries. — www.debracowan.com /www.johnrobertsmusic.com \nJohn and Debra first met in 1999. John\, an English émigré\, has been singing sea shanties\, broadside ballads\, pub tunes\, and British traditional songs since the 1960s. Sometimes his bold voice stands alone; other times he accompanies himself on Anglo concertina or banjo. \nDebra’s nightingale soprano complements and contrasts with John’s rich baritone. Debra often leaves her guitar on the stage: her strong\, clear\, and expressive voice needs no instrumental support. Her repertoire focuses on traditional songs and on contemporary work that deserves a wider audience. She’s been known to rework old love songs\, sea shanties\, and ballads to give them feminist twists. \nJohn and Debra firmly believe that folk music is not a spectator sport. They can turn any audience into a chorale by patiently teaching sometimes complicated and often tongue-tying choruses\, along with familiar songs. Whether the venue is a coffeehouse\, auditorium\, or living room\, listeners leave a Roberts-Cowan performance smiling and often singing\, knowing that the song is the star\, and singing is what keeps great songs alive.

SUMMARY:Chenango Sessions presents Mulebone
DESCRIPTION:Mulebone is a musical partnership comprised of multi-instrumentalist\, John Ragusa and roots music specialist\, Hugh Pool. The grist for their mill is traditional blues. Together\, Mulebone has recorded four critically lauded albums and achieved American Music Awards Top 100 with all but one. Their latest offering Keep on Movin earned the distinction of being the only independent release in the A.M.A. Top 40 for 5 weeks in 2015. Along with playing live and TV appearances\, they won “Blues artist of the year” recognitions at radio stations from Seattle\, Washington\, to Red Bank\, New Jersey\, and Hugh Pool was inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame in 2016. Any given week may find them playing clubs in NYC or entertaining at private parties thrown by David Rockefeller\, Bruce Wasserstein and list of other East Coast residents who are enthusiastic about bringing these boys in for a party by road\, sea or air. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTogether in Mulebone\, Hugh and John play slide guitar boogies\, one-chord trance riffs a la Howlin Wolf\, the uptempo rags of Reverend Gary Davis\, and\n country blues of all shapes and colors. Sometimes they play close to \nthe source\, almost as if tracing the image\, and at other moments\, they \nre-examine the source\, float above it\, take a new look as one \nunderstanding their home from a distant land. \n\n\n\nUnlike most “blues” ensembles\, \nMulebone dispatches with the essence of that which defines the genre as \nknown by the masses – a rhythm section of bass and drums. Imagine a \nblues collective minus a bass line cobbled from Willie Dixon\, coupled \nwith a pounding back beat. Proclaims Pool: “A duo is very sympathetic to\n an audience! People tell me ‘God damn\, that’s a lot of music coming out\n of just the two of you. Our sound is backwoods and fairly primitive. \nBut it’s deep\, and it’s fresh. There’s a lot of athleticism in what we \ndo.” Tom Semioli\, No Depression\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Ragusa\n\n\n\nJohn Ragusa can play anything he can put his lips on…wait a minute….did\n I say that out loud? In Mulebone\, John plays conch shell\, Jews harp\, \ncornet\, all manner of flutes\, tin whistle\, and chimes in on the harmony \nvocals. He is member of Beth Nielsen Chapman‘s group as well as his own John Ragusa outfit\, and plays regularly in conjunction with Deepak Chopra‘s speaking engagements. Amongst dozens of studio credits are contemporary jazz greats Joe Taylor\, Jeremy Wall\, and world music icon Tom Zé. \n\n\n\nHugh says\, “One time we were in Lexington\, Kentucky sitting at an \noutdoor cafe and John played me a bunch of melodies sliding a straw up \nand down in a cup of ice water”…you get the drift. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHugh Pool\n\n\n\nHugh Pool\n plays guitars\, harmonica\, boot board and sings\, all with a mouth full \nof whiskey and a giant heart. He has played his brand of blues in clubs \nand at festivals from Jakarta\, Indonesia to North Cape\, \nNorway; From Vienna\, Austria to Ottawa\, Ontario\, and has been critically\n lauded by the New York Times\, New York Press\, the Village Voice\, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette\, Cleveland Plain Dealer\, Blues Revue Magazine…the list goes on. \n\n\n\nHe is also a noted recordist and producer who has worked on hundreds of records at his Williamsburg\, Brooklyn studio\, Excello Recording including sessions with Taj Mahal\, Debbie Harry\, Marshall Crenshaw\, and even Molly Ringwald. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour nationally syndicated radio program which primarily features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences around Binghamton\, New York. Audiences and artists are encouraged to interact\, and the spirit of the live show is preserved in the radio program and recordings. Due to the intimate nature of the venues\, not all Chenango Sessions are open to the public. If no address is listed\, it’s probably a show in a private home. But don’t let that stop you! To attend a private session\, you can subscribe to our periodic email newsletter\, check the performer’s website\, or get details from an acquaintance\, family member\, or other guest. 100% of audience donations go directly to the artists. Punctuated by tight harmonies and skillful musicianship\, and with a focus on songwriting\, Cold Chocolate has quickly gained recognition for their original music and high-energy shows. The band has shared bills with Leftover Salmon and David Grisman\, and regularly performs at venues and music festivals up and down the East Coast.
