SUMMARY:The Wholesale Klezmer Band
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on June 17 to welcome The Wholesale Klezmer Band in their first ever Binghamton performance! The band features Yosl (Joe) Kurland (vocals and fiddle)\, Peggy Davis (flute & vocals) and Aaron Bousel (accordion). \nKlezmer music arose in medieval eastern European Jewish communities to perform at holidays and celebratory events (especially weddings). It’s origins lay in Jewish folk music and cantorial chanting\, with elements of other local ethnic folk tunes (especially those of the Roma) and military band music. When brought to the United States by Jewish immigrants in the 20th century\, it was further influenced by jazz and theater music. The Wholesale Klezmer Band performs in Yiddish and Loshn Koydesh\, (Ashkenazic Hebrew)\, and they specialize in making it accessible to the English speaking world with translations\, stories\, explanations\, visual aids\, and that universal language that speaks to your feet and makes them want to dance. \nThe Cranberry Coffeehouse\, a local folk tradition for over 50 years\, generally takes place on the third Saturday of the month at 7:30 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 183 Riverside Drive in Binghamton. Coffee and baked goods are available during the intermission. Performances feature a middle set where local musicians\, story-tellers\, and other entertainers are invited to share their talents (with a 5-minute limit per person/group). A $10 per person donation at the door is suggested (all funds\, minus a small fee for use of the space\, benefit our performers).

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Corner House (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19. NEW DATE T.B.D. \nAbiding by a love for adventure\, Corner House finds purpose and solace in the beauty of earth and music. Clinging whole heartedly to studied traditions\, the Boston-based band writes and arranges music liberally comprised of Irish\, Scottish\, Appalachian Stringband\, and Bluegrass influences. — www.cornerhouseband.com \nThe singular roots music scene of Boston\, Massachusetts\, has long been a destination for musicians seeking level footing to build upon. On Winter eves most suited for warm tea and blankets\, Ethan Hawkins (guitar)\, Louise Bichan (fiddle)\, and Ethan Setiawan (mandolin)\, found a musical home in one another. In the autumn of 2017\, Corner House debuted at FreshGrass Festival in North Adams\, Massachusetts\, before recording an EP and touring Scotland the following year. Returning from overseas\, the three found the illustrious cellist\, Casey Murray\, living just down the street and invited the contra-dance influenced player to join the fold. \n\nSmart Folks (released September 13\, 2019)  is the first EP from Corner House that includes Casey Murray on cello and clawhammer banjo\, and the second overall from the group. With four originals from the group and two contemporary Irish numbers\, the EP is a diverse mix of sounds and textures\, songs and tunes. The first cut\, a collection of Irish slip jigs (“Farewell to Whaley Range” and “Soggy’s Slip Jig”) combines swirling melody and counterpoint. Following that is one of two Hawkins-penned tunes on the recording. “Happy Now” is a musing on family and depression\, brought to life by the band. The title track\, “Smart Folks”\, penned by Setiawan\, works with odd phrase lengths and a singing melody to create a unique profile\, characteristic to his writing. The album closes with a banjo tune by Murray; “Through the Snow-Covered Pines” evokes the Appalachian stringband side of the band\, finishing the album on an uplifting note. \nThe tunes and songs that make up Smart Folks came to be over a period of several months\, before being committed to recordings in March 2019. After the writing process\, the whole band sits down with the music\, and every voice is vital to the final product. This collection of tunes is a bright introduction to Corner House\, with the promise of much more to come. \n“Corner House’s music is thoughtful and inspired…points straight in the direction of where roots music is headed\, and it’s a great and bright destination.” – Bruce Molsky \n“These fine musicians and lovely people think about each note they make and it comes together in something bigger. Simply beautiful music.” – Maeve Gilchrist \n“…expertly played instruments and beautifully arranged vocal harmonies. Lilting\, high flying and leaving a flutter in your chest.” – Red Line Roots \n“It’s warm\, beautiful\, and earthly\, and feels like it comes straight from the soul.” – Divide and Conquer \n“It’s brilliant!” Alex Cumming\, WMFO Radio \n“minimalist spooked..musically shape-shifting” Folking.com \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. Audiences and artists are encouraged to interact\, and the spirit of the live show is preserved in the radio program and recordings. If you would like to attend a session\, contact Andru.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Aaron Jonah Lewis (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19. NEW DATE T.B.D. \nAaron Jonah Lewis is a champion fiddler who has been elbow-deep in traditional American fiddle and banjo music since his first lessons at the age of five with Kentucky native Robert Oppelt. Lewis has taken blue ribbons at the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop\, WV\, and at the Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax\, VA\, the oldest and largest fiddlers convention in the country. He is also noted for his mastery of multiple banjo styles.  He spends most of his time teaching\, touring as a solo performer\, with the Corn Potato String Band\, Lovestruck Balladeers\, and other projects. – www.aaronjonahlewis.com \n\nLewis has appeared on dozens of recordings from bluegrass and old time to traditional jazz\, contemporary experimental and Turkish classical music projects. He has taught workshops at the the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and at the English Folk Dance and Song Society in London. He also plays and teaches banjo\, mandolin\, and guitar and is currently based in Detroit. \nAs a banjoist\, Lewis explores some interesting veins in the roots of Old Time\, Bluegrass\, Ragtime and Jazz music through his newest recording\, Mozart of the Banjo: The Joe Morley Project. This project is devoted to the music of the great English prodigy and virtuoso composer Joe Morley (1867-1937)\, who wrote a significant body of great banjo pieces in a technique that people today call “classic fingerstyle.” \nGreg Adams\, Archivist at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage\, says\, “Lewis is one of the few performing musicians with the facility to build compelling musical bridges between the printed banjo music and techniques of the 19th century and the instrument’s journey into recorded sound by the turn of the 20th century.” \nOther musicians featured on the album include banjoist Ben Belcher\, pianists Tessa Hartle and Kevin Allswede\, Grace van’t Hof on ukulele and Rachel Pearson on bass. The album was released on Tiki Parlour Recordings in late 2019. \nAaron Jonah Lewis is passionate about sharing early fingerstyle banjo music. He brings light to the fact that classic banjo was the most popular form of music a hundred years ago\, though today it’s almost entirely forgotten. He is “trying to keep (classic banjo) alive and spread it around\, as it’s a delightful style that brings joy and connects us to the depth of our shared American history.” \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Chris Merkley (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19. NEW DATE T.B.D. \nChris Merkley has performed more than a thousand shows\, from the streets of Paris to venues throughout Europe and across the United States.   He has released nine albums with a variety of groups\, including the songwriting duo Merkley & Morgan; his high-octane Bluegrass and Country Blues globetrotting band\, The Crooners; and the swampy blues-rock trio\, Digger Jones. Merkley’s most recent solo album\, Momentos\, was recorded in the early morning hours at the Homer Center for the Arts\, a Baptist church–turned 400 seat theater. SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Andy Cohen (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19. NEW DATE T.B.D. \nAndy Cohen is a virtuoso finger-style guitarist who has been described as “a walking\, talking folk-blues-roots music encyclopedia.” He grew up in a home with a piano and lots of Dixieland Jazz records. During the Sixties Folk Revival\, he got hooked on the music of Big Bill Broonzy and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. When Andy was 16\, he heard South Carolina’s Rev. Gary Davis perform and the effect on him was profound. He has devoted his life to studying\, performing\, and promoting traditional blues and folk music of the pre-World War II era. — www.andycohenmusic.com \n\nAndy has toured solo\, as well as with Martin\, Bogan and Armstrong\, John Jackson\, Rev. Gary Davis\, Brother Daniel Womack\, Rev. Dan Smith\, Jim Brewer\, and Honeyboy Edwards. He also worked extensively with Walt and Ethel Phelps\, Big Joe Duskin\, Pigmeat Jarrett\, Etta Baker\, Big Boy Henry\, and James “Son” Thomas. \nAndy has helped to support a number of his mentors and younger players by organizing festivals and other venues for them to play in. He has written about several of the old masters and studied their work in a systematic way. Many of his students are now professional touring musicians. The Country Blues says\, “One thing is for sure\, the boy can play. There are few people around today who had a chance to pick it all up from the old generations\, get this good at it and continue to cherish and preserve the old traditions.” He has been assiduous in sharing his expertise in classes\, camps\, and anywhere people are making music . \nAndy Cohen has more than a dozen recordings to his credit\, including Oh Glory\, How Happy I Am: The Sacred Songs of Rev. Gary Davis\, and Andrew M. Cohen: Dolceola Favorites. An enthusiastic proponent of the dolceola\, Andy says he “never leaves home without it.” Described by some as a “miniature piano\,” the dolceola has a keyboard\, but the strings are struck with wooden mallets. \nAlong the way\, Andy earned a Master’s Degree in anthropology. His passions come together in his essay on “The Hands of Blues Guitarists\,” published in Ramblin’ On My Mind: New Perspectives On the Blues\, edited by David Evans (2008). \nAt an Andy Cohen concert\, expect to hear blues rooted in Mississippi\, the Piedmont\, Memphis\, and Chicago\, as well as some ragtime\, gospel\, and original tunes. \nIn 2011 Andy received the Eisteddfod Award from The Eisteddfod Traditional Music Festival. Festival Director Dr. Jerome Epstein said\, “We decided to give the award to Andy\, one of this year’s performers\, because of his outstanding contributions to the field of traditional music\, as performer\, collector\, and advocate.”  In 2012 Andy received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Autoharp Gathering. \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Drew Gibson (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19. NEW DATE T.B.D. \nLike romantic dust\, Drew Gibson‘s music draws on influence from the American days of country-blues and songwriters of the recent past.  Since releasing his debut album\, Letterbox\, in 2007 the finger-style guitarist from Virginia has garnered attention from USA Today\, The Washington Post\, The Washington Area Music Association\, The Greenville Journal\, OnTap Magazine\, RVA Magazine\, and No Depression for his intensely personal songs and stagecraft as a live performing story-teller. — www.drew-gibson.com \n\nIn April 2019 Gibson released his fourth record\, entitled Shipbuilder. The latest offering followed his critically acclaimed concept album\, 1532 which was born from the healing journey on which Gibson embarked after the loss of his father on the Fourth of July 2012.  While Fifteen Thirty-Two traced stories of Gibson’s family from its roots in Scotland to the branches across Canada and the United States\, Shipbuilder carries a theme of water throughout; how it flows in our lives\, from a rising tide and a receding flood to a ship disappearing over the horizon. Gibson’s imagery invokes nostalgia and a means to carry on through the ups and downs of life\, building dreams to stay above it all. \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Kinobe (Cranberry Coffeehouse)
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19. NEW DATE T.B.D. \nKINOBE (pronounced chi-no-bay) is a Ugandan singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose work has been described as “some of the most exquisite music coming out of Africa today.” For more than 15 years\, he has captivated audiences with his soothing African rhythms\, understated vocals and powerful world-roots-dance melodies that emanate from the diversity of the many traditional instruments he customised to develop his unique sound. — www.kinobemusic.com \n\nKinobe has often shared the stage with other celebrated artists\, including Baaba Maal\, Angelique Kidjo\, Salif Keita\, Youssou N’Dour\, Oliver Mtukudzi and Hugh Masekela—and he has released 10 albums. His latest\, The Voice Within\, is quite different from all the others. Rather than offering a mix of traditional songs with intimate rhythms\, all of the tracks on The Voice Within are original\, and tackle social and global issues dear to his heart–love\, diversity\, economic development and war—“but in a beautiful way\,” he promises. \nThe release of the CD coincided with Kinobe’s long-awaited 2018 North American tour in which he performed solo\, as well as in an electrifying stage production alongside his Dance of Hope ensemble. The young troupe is made up of children he mentored in Ugandan orphanages and refugee camps. \nAs a creative arts producer\, speaker and facilitator\, Kinobe has given talks and workshops all over the world and worked extensively with schools and colleges conducting residences and outreach exchange programs\, which in most cases lead to commemorative concerts with local students. \nThrough his Dance of Hope Foundation (www.danceofhope.com)\, Kinobe has dedicated his life to using his music and voice to bring love and joy to people\, and help build a healthier\, more peaceful world for children and families everywhere. \n\nThe Cranberry Coffeehouse encourages musicians\, vocalists\, story-tellers\, and dancers of all ages and skill levels to share their talents during the Middle Set. Middle set performances are each limited to five minutes. Sign up at the door on the night of the show. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Coffee\, tea\, and snacks will be available. SUMMARY:Westbound Situation (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Westbound Situation blends the precision of classical chamber music\, the rhythmic drive of bluegrass\, and the colorful expression of jazz into a new style of chamber music—chambergrass. The quartet—comprised of Grant Flick on violin\, Matt Davis on banjo\, Zach Brown on cello\, and Jacob Warren on bass—mixes composition and improvisation seamlessly into their entirely memorized arrangements. — www.westboundsituation.com \nThe group formed out of the 2016 Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS)\, a program run by multi-instrumentalist Mike Marshall. The program accepts 16 talented string players under the age of 22 from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation\, composition and performance training. All four were two time participants\, an honor that not everyone is able to receive. Some notable AMS alumni include Paul Kowert of the Punch Brothers\, Alex Hargreaves of Turtle Island String Quartet\, and Xavier Foley\, winner of the 2014 Sphinx Competition. \n\nWestbound Situation has a strong commitment to music education. The group’s combined experience in classical\, bluegrass\, jazz\, and original/improvised music is something not typically offered in the standard curriculum found at most schools and colleges (at least not all at the same time). These styles\, among others\, give each student the chance to make their own music\, and through this process valuable lessons in creativity\, listening\, and leadership are achieved. Each member of the group maintains a private studio\, and all have been invited to provide workshops and masterclasses at schools and festivals across the country. \nWestbound Situation’s exciting and diverse concerts feature a set of unique original repertoire colored with recognizable standards from many genres. With bluegrass\, classical chamber music\, and jazz all coming together in the group’s concept of chambergrass\, a Westbound Situation concert is dazzling musical journey not soon forgotten. \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. SUMMARY:Robin Bullock (Cranberry Coffeehouse)
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as a “Celtic guitar god” by Baltimore City Paper and “one of the best folk instrumentalists in the business” by Sing Out! Magazine\, Robin Bullock is one of the preeminent acoustic music masters of our time. His virtuosity on guitar\, cittern and mandolin blends the ancient melodies of the Celtic lands\, their vigorous American descendants\, and the masterworks of the Baroque and Renaissance eras into one powerful musical vision. The 17th-century harp tunes of legendary Irish bard Turlough O’Carolan\, the spirited jigs and reels of rural Ireland\, the haunting ballads of the southern Appalachians and the timeless compositions of Bach\, Dowland and Francesco da Milano all find a musical common ground in Robin’s music\, where lightning-fast fingerwork one moment is perfectly balanced with tender\, quiet intimacy the next. A warm\, friendly presence onstage\, Robin effortlessly creates a magical world for the audience with his multi-instrumental wizardry\, taking them on an unforgettable journey into the deep heart’s core and through the music of the spheres. — www.robinbullock.com \nOriginally rising to prominence as a founding member of the innovative acoustic world-music trio Helicon (winners of the Association for Independent Music’s prestigious INDIE Award for Best Seasonal Recording)\, Robin’s solo career has won him a ranking among DigitalDreamDoor.com’s “100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists\,” a Player’s Choice Award from Acoustic Guitar Magazine in the Celtic guitar category\, three Washington Area Music Association WAMMIE Awards(Traditional Folk Instrumentalist 1997 and 1999; Traditional Folk Recording of the Year 1998)\, a Governor’s Award from the Maryland State Arts Council and a feature broadcast on National Public Radio’s hugely popular Celtic music program “The Thistle and Shamrock.” \nRobin maintains a busy international touring schedule\, performing in a number of settings; though his primary focus is solo performance\, he can also be heard in Celtic duos with guitarist Steve Baughman and Irish singer Aoife Clancy\, as a member of the award-winning world-folk trio Helicon\, as part of an Asheville-based John Denver tribute group\, and most notably\, as sideman with Grammy Award-winning folk icon Tom Paxton. Robin’s many years of touring with Tom have included collaborations with such luminaries as John McCutcheon\, Grammy-winning songwriters Jon Vezner and Don Henry\, and on their 2010\, 2012\, 2014 and 2015 “Together at Last” tours\, Tom’s fellow Grammy winner Janis Ian. \nAn experienced and articulate instructor\, Robin is a regular faculty member at several of the U.S.’s leading acoustic music camps\, including Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamps in Tennessee\, Common Ground On The Hill in Maryland\, the March Mandolin Festival in New Hampshire\, and twenty-two consecutive years at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina\, where he was honored in 2016 with a Master Music Maker Award for lifetime achievement in musicianship and teaching. (Of the thousand-plus faculty members in the Gathering’s 27-year history\, only 23 have received this award to date.) \n\nThe Cranberry Coffeehouse encourages musicians\, vocalists\, story-tellers\, and dancers of all ages and skill levels to share their talents during the Middle Set. SUMMARY:Hubby Jenkins (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Hubby Jenkins (Carolina Chocolate Drops\, Rhiannon Giddens) is a talented multi-instrumentalist who endeavours to share his love and knowledge of old-time American music. Born and raised in Brooklyn\, he delved into his Southern roots\, following the thread of African American history that wove itself through country blues\, ragtime\, fiddle and banjo\, and traditional jazz. Hubby started his higher musical education as a busker. He developed his guitar and vocal craft on the sidewalks and subway platforms of New York City\, performing material by those venerable artists whose work he was quickly absorbing. An ambitiously itinerant musician\, he took his show on the road\, playing the streets\, coffee shops\, bars\, and house parties of cities around the country. – www.hubbyjenkins.com \n\nAfter years of busking around the United States and making a name for himself\, Hubby became acquainted with the Carolina Chocolate Drops. From 2010 until their last show together in 2016\, he was an integral part of the Grammy award winning group. Since 2015\, he has been an active touring and recording member of the Rhiannon Giddens band. He was on her album Tomorrow Is My Turn in 2015 and Freedom Highway in 2017. Today he spreads his knowledge and love of old-time American music and history through his dynamic solo performances. \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York. Audiences and artists are encouraged to interact\, and the spirit of the live show is preserved in the radio program and recordings. SUMMARY:Debra Cowan & John Roberts (Chenango Sessions)
DESCRIPTION:With their eloquent voices and expert musicianship\, John Roberts and Debra Cowan bring to life songs seldom heard on TV or radio these days. Drawn from both the folk tradition and the work of contemporary songwriters\, many of these songs tell of the timeless joys and sorrows of human experience. They offer windows into where we’ve come from and perhaps where we’re headed. Both John and Debra can spin a ripping good yarn and whether illuminating\, inspiring\, or laugh-out-loud funny\, their stories convey their love of the songs and the people who’ve sung them over the years\, decades — and in some cases centuries. — www.debracowan.com /www.johnrobertsmusic.com \nJohn and Debra first met in 1999. John\, an English émigré\, has been singing sea shanties\, broadside ballads\, pub tunes\, and British traditional songs since the 1960s. Sometimes his bold voice stands alone; other times he accompanies himself on Anglo concertina or banjo. \nDebra’s nightingale soprano complements and contrasts with John’s rich baritone. Debra often leaves her guitar on the stage: her strong\, clear\, and expressive voice needs no instrumental support. Her repertoire focuses on traditional songs and on contemporary work that deserves a wider audience. She’s been known to rework old love songs\, sea shanties\, and ballads to give them feminist twists. \nJohn and Debra firmly believe that folk music is not a spectator sport. They can turn any audience into a chorale by patiently teaching sometimes complicated and often tongue-tying choruses\, along with familiar songs. Whether the venue is a coffeehouse\, auditorium\, or living room\, listeners leave a Roberts-Cowan performance smiling and often singing\, knowing that the song is the star\, and singing is what keeps great songs alive. \n\nThe Chenango Sessions\, hosted by Andru Bemis\, is a weekly\, one-hour\, nationally syndicated radio program which features world-class musicians playing in intimate spaces—living rooms\, galleries\, and listening rooms—for small\, enthusiastic audiences\, mostly around Binghamton\, New York.
